Nevada
County is justly famous for its part in the California Gold Rush
that began in 1849. The history of that period, when great fortunes
were made and lost as thousands were drawn by the lure of gold,
is still evident in the historic sites and cities of Nevada County.
But Nevada County has found a new mother lode of success in the
past few decades, not in mining silver or gold, but in its ever
growing attraction to tourists from around the world and throughout
California.
Now home to wineries, fine restaurants, sophisticated shops and
boutiques, museums, cultural centers and events, performing arts
and great places to stay, Nevada County still enjoys the benefits
of its natural beauty and the grandeur of the Sierra Nevada mountains.
To help you plan for your visit, we have divided the Gold
Country into two sections:
Nevada City — Nevada City has managed
to retain its old fashioned charm.
Grass Valley — For a beautifully
preserved glimpse into California’s golden past, Grass Valley
is an exciting place to be!
