Other Nevada County
areas:
Grass Valley
The deep green hillsides, white church steeples and red brick
storefronts are the first visible clues that this colorful Sierra
foothills Gold Rush town is a different kind of place.
In a stroll through the narrow streets of this exciting district,
you will soon learn about what a L.A. Times reporter called "a
Nevada City state of mind." Like other Gold Rush towns up
and down the Mother Lode, Nevada City began in 1849. While other
told towns have disappeared, Nevada City has managed to retain
its old fashioned charm. Nevada City’s entire downtown area has
been listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The town
has retained an artsy, bohemian flavor that adds to its appeal.
In addition to the 90-building downtown historic district with
its many shops, restaurants and bed and breakfast inns, the town
is a recognized arts and entertainment center of the Sierra Foothills.
It is a booktown, features several galleries and is home the award-winning
groups such as Music in the Mountains and the Foothill Theatre
Company in the Historic Nevada Theatre. Nevada City is eqally
famous for the beautiful fall colors which dominate the landscape
in October and November.

Nevada City Winery
Located in Nevada City
| |
|
More than a few small wineries have started in a garage. But we may be the only winery to begin that way, move on to bigger and better quarters, and still be in a garage. Founded in 1980 in a small garage on the outskirts of town, in 1982 the Winery moved to its present location, the historic Miners Foundry Garage, on Spring St in downtown Nevada City. Remarkably, the Winery is located less than two blocks from where the original Nevada City Winery stood over a century ago. The Winery was begun by Allan Haley, a Nevada County native with a European wine education and a dream of bringing winemaking back to our region. In 1880 there were over 300 acres of grapes in the County. In 1980 when the Winery opened there was one small vineyard, recently planted. Twenty years later there are again well over 300 acres of grapes and the wine industry is flourishing once more. Tasting Room Open Daily 11 - 5 , Sunday 12 - 5;Tours Saturday at 11:30 am - 321 Spring St. Nevada City, CA 95959 - 530.265.9463 or 800.203.9463
